Releasing her next EP ‘Amor En Los Tiempos De Odio,’ today on November 9th, MJ Nebreda is a name that will soon be on everybody’s lips - and probably a lot of our ‘Spotify Wrapped’ summaries too. Currently based in Miami, her Venezuelan and Peruvian background has a strong influence on her work, which usually mixes a variety of styles into a truly unique and identifiable sound. Her first EP, released on Godmode (Channel Tres, Yaeji), featured the house track ‘Quédate’, which blends traditional Latin rhythms with Scandinavian-style space disco and highlife. The video for the single was shot in Peru amongst the Andes mountains.
MJ Nebreda experienced growing up in multiple places from Venezuela to London, however she always found Latin music brought a sense of comfort and feeling of home. With this music being such a part of her sense of self and identity, she began making beats and singing over Latin dance tracks during lockdown in Miami, creating rhythmic tracks that mix multiple influences. The new EP is no different; Nebreda always pays tribute to her pan-Latin roots, and we can expect to hear elements of reggaeton, dembow, 90’s house and Venezuelan electronic genres like Raptor House.
Nebreda’s videos are equally as exciting as her tracks; DIY energy with a quality finish that is both nostalgic and exciting, blending indie-pop style scenes with models in rubber animal heads with hazy shots that feel like snapshots of memories; old-school computer game-esque animations and 2000s fashion. They compliment her infectious beats with dynamic visuals that satisfy the eye as much as the music satisfies the soul.
The new EP, ‘Amor En Los Tiempos De Odio’, is a collaboration with Nick León, is out now and can be found here. It also features DJ Baba, a fellow Venezuelan artist known for collaborations with Arca. ‘Frida Kahlo,’ the first single from the EP, is produced by and features Yung Iverson. Watch the video here.
